UMPIREÂ NETBALL
Controlling play for the safety of participants.
Noosa Netball Association offers an umpiring programme for beginner umpires whether junior or senior. Umpiring can be a great way to give back to the sport, gain confidence, make new friends and even improve your own netball game as you gain a better understanding of the rules of netball.
Umpires keep the game safe, fair and fun for everyone so are an integral part of netball.
We have some amazing mentors who will be with you every step of the way, passing on their knowledge and understanding. They were once where you are now so understand what you need to do to achieve your goals.
Please contact noosanetballumpires@gmail.com if you want further information about their umpiring development programme.
To start you on your journey, here are some prerequisites to be a good umpire. Some of these you wont have yet but don’t worry, they will come as you gain more experience.
-
An understanding of the rules of netball – how can you umpire if you don’t know the rules
-
Good fitness level – remember you need to be able to umpire the whole game at the same intensity. Unfortunately there are no rolling subs for umpires!
-
Being able to communicate both verbally and with hand signals (we will teach you this)
-
Be fair and consistent
-
Blow your whistle loudly
-
Be confident (that comes when you know the rules)
-
Enjoy a challenge
-
Accept that sometimes you will have a bad game – remember, so do players.
-
You will make mistakes – dust yourself off and move on - don’t dwell on it
-
Stay calm under pressure, focus on the game
-
Dress appropriately – we ask our players to be in uniform, so should you.
-
SMILE – there is nothing in the rule book that says you cant!
-
Have fun. Its not meant to be a chore
