UMPIRE NETBALL

Noosa Netball Association runs an umpiring program for beginners — juniors and seniors alike. Umpiring is a fantastic way to give back to the sport, build confidence, make new friends, and even improve your own netball skills by deepening your understanding of the rules.

Umpires play a vital role in keeping the game safe, fair, and fun for everyone.

You’ll be supported by our amazing mentors every step of the way. They’ve been in your shoes, know what it takes, and are ready to share their knowledge to help you reach your goals.

To kick off your umpiring journey, here are some key qualities and skills that make a great umpire. Don’t worry if you don’t have them all yet — they’ll develop as you gain experience.

-
Know the rules of netball – you can’t umpire well if you don’t understand them.
-
Maintain good fitness – you’ll need to keep up the same intensity for the whole game (no rolling subs for umpires!).
-
Communicate clearly – both with your voice and hand signals (we’ll teach you these).
-
Be fair and consistent – every call counts.
-
Blow your whistle loudly – so everyone hears it.
-
Be confident – this comes naturally as you master the rules.
-
Enjoy a challenge – every game is different.
-
Accept the tough days – players have off games too.
-
Learn from mistakes – move on quickly and keep going.
-
Stay calm under pressure – focus on the game in front of you.
-
Dress appropriately – just as players wear uniforms, umpires should present professionally.
-
Smile – there’s nothing in the rule book that says you can’t!
-
Have fun
